The Start of Spring

The start of spring in around two months is the start of chick season. For me, choosing a new breed is key for egg production and diversity in the gene pool. For this year instead of getting chicks from the feed store I will order them online. For people who don’t know how this is possible, what these companies do is hatch chicks, transport them to holding boxes, move boxes to specially designed heated trucks, transport them to the closest post office in your area and then you go pick them up. That's just a simple explanation but you may be asking if they feed them on the way there, well not because they use the natural process called chicken biology. Once a chick hatches it carries a small amount of yoke in its stomach that was not used during its development in the egg and this yoke can last the chick 3 days without food or water (if shipment is delayed because of some unpredictable circumstances, they will give them food and water). The website I was planning on using is Chickens for Sale - Baby Chicks, Poultry & Fowl Egg Hatchery | Cackle Hatchery® and looking through breeds and I’m thinking about getting some Cuckoo Marans (link to breed Cuckoo Maran Chickens For Sale | Dark Brown Egg Layers | Cackle Hatchery® ) This breed is a pretty good egg layer but the main attraction to it is the Dark brown egg, almost chocolate-colored eggs it lays. Until it's time for spring Hopely I don’t change my mind and I am really excited to raise this breed.

Park Ducks

  Something that always bugs me is park ducks. Not because I hate waterfowl and in fact, I love ducks and geese. I even own some like 2 Muscovy ducks and 3 African geese. The reason I dislike them is the concept of them existing where they are. Most waterfowl you see at the park are domestic ducks and geese. The way most these ducks and geese get to these parks they are released by people who cannot handle the care that ducks need or by people who have male ducks and do not want them (because most people do not want more than one male duck or because they are aggressive). The problem is most people see this as a moral act because they leave their duck free to swim to their life content. But in fact, it is a long shot from that. First, the predators that can easily catch and eat them because most domestic waterfowl cannot fly, and their food source relies completely on people and once that food source goes away in the winter they are doomed.
